After twenty years of taking enquiries in this city, the demand splits into four recognisable shapes, and knowing which one you are in saves months. The first is the credibility rebuild: an established firm — usually engineering, export, pharma distribution or construction — whose website was built in 2014, still works, and quietly costs them deals because it looks like it was built in 2014. Buyers who have already decided to call them use the site to check they are real, and it fails that check. These projects are about structure, proof and specification clarity far more than about visual fashion.
The second is the enquiry problem: the site exists, gets some traffic, and produces almost nothing. Nine times out of ten the cause is not design at all. It is that the site never says plainly what the company does, buries the phone number in an image, loads in six seconds on a mid-range Android, and asks for eleven form fields before it will accept an enquiry. Fixing that is cheap relative to the return, and it is the first thing we look at.
The third is the internal system: a business running on twenty linked spreadsheets and a shared drive, where one person is the single point of failure for a report that takes half a day. That is ERP, CRM, HRMS or a bespoke internal tool, and it is where most of the measurable money in our work sits. The fourth is data and automation — companies that already have systems and now have the different problem of getting reliable numbers out of them.
Most Kolkata firms arrive believing they are in the first category and turn out to be in the third. It is worth being honest about this early, because a beautiful new website will not fix a business whose actual bottleneck is that nobody can tell you last month’s margin without three days of work.
How to judge a web design company in Kolkata before you sign
The market here has a wide quality spread and almost no reliable public signal, so buyers routinely pay corporate prices for template work. A handful of questions separate studios quickly, and none of them require technical knowledge to ask.
Ask to see the code or the design files from a recent project, not just the live site. A studio that hand-builds will show you a repository and a Figma file without hesitation. Ask what happens to those files if you stop working with them — the honest answer is that you own them, and any other answer is a lock-in you should price in. Ask what the site scored on Core Web Vitals in the field, not in a lab test, and ask to see it in Search Console rather than a screenshot.
Ask who will actually do the work and whether you can speak to them. In a great deal of the local market, the person who wins the project is not the person who delivers it, and the gap between the pitch and the output is exactly the size of that substitution. Finally, ask what they would talk you out of. A studio that agrees with every item on your wishlist is selling; one that tells you which third of it is not worth building is consulting.
On price, be suspicious in both directions. A ₹15,000 quote for a corporate site means a purchased theme, which is a legitimate product but should be described as one. A ₹6,00,000 quote for a twelve-page brochure site means somebody has priced your budget rather than the work. The honest middle for original design and build in this city is wide but not mysterious, and any studio worth hiring will break the number down by what it buys.

The question that tells you most
Ask what they would do if the project went wrong six months after launch and you had already paid in full. Studios that have been in one city for decades answer that question immediately, because their next twenty projects come from the last twenty clients. Studios that will not be here next year change the subject.
What being near you actually changes
Proximity is easy to claim and harder to demonstrate, so it is worth being specific about where it makes a measurable difference. It matters most in discovery. A specification written from a video call describes what people say they do; a day spent watching the work describes what they actually do, and those are rarely the same document. Almost every scope we have revised for the better was revised after someone stood beside the process.
It matters again at rollout. Adoption of a new system depends far more on being in the room during the first week than on the quality of the training material. When a supervisor finds a screen slower than the register it replaced, that needs to be seen, timed and fixed within a day — not raised as a ticket, triaged, and addressed a fortnight later by which point the register is back in use.
And it matters when something goes wrong. A managed client with a system we operate has an escalation path that reaches a named engineer, and for anything genuinely serious that engineer can be at your premises the same day rather than the same week. In twenty years we have needed that a handful of times, and on each of those occasions it was the difference between an incident and a crisis.
What does not require proximity is the build itself.
