AI Overview and AI Mode changed the shape of a Google results page. For a great many searches they are genuinely useful. For a great many others — a researcher checking a primary source, a developer looking for a specific error message, a buyer comparing suppliers — they push the actual results below the fold and add a second or more to the time it takes to reach the link you wanted.
No AI Overview removes those panels and restores a plain list of results. It does one thing, it does it without slowing the page down, and it collects nothing. There is an optional second mode that also strips sponsored blocks and the assorted modules Google inserts between results, for people who want the page reduced to links.
It is our most-used published extension, which we take as reasonable evidence that a substantial number of people wanted exactly this and no more.
The problem it solves
The frustration is not with AI summaries as a concept — it is with the vertical space they consume and the delay before organic results settle into position. On a laptop the first three results are frequently pushed below the visible area; on a phone it can be six or seven.
The available workarounds were all worse than the problem. Appending a search operator to every query is tedious and changes the results. Switching search engines is a bigger decision than most people want to make over layout. A general-purpose element blocker requires writing rules and breaks whenever the markup changes.

It can, and Google changes the results page regularly. We monitor for it and publish updates promptly — usually within a few days. If you notice it has stopped working, the fastest fix is to check for an extension update.

How we build and keep a published extension alive
No AI Overview — Clean Search is built natively on Manifest V3 rather than ported from the older extension architecture, and that distinction matters more than it sounds. Manifest V3 replaced persistent background pages with ephemeral service workers that the browser is free to shut down at any moment. An extension written on the old assumptions works perfectly on a developer’s machine and behaves unpredictably on a user’s machine after their laptop has been asleep for four hours.
So state is persisted to storage and restored rather than held in memory, anything that must survive a worker restart uses an alarm rather than a timer, and long operations are structured as resumable steps. Where network behaviour is modified, it uses declarative rules evaluated by the browser rather than a JavaScript listener on every request — which is why the extension adds no measurable per-request cost to your browsing.
Permissions are the part users are right to scrutinise, and we design for the narrowest set that makes the feature work. Anything optional is requested at the point of use rather than at install, which is both more honest and, for a public extension, materially better for install conversion. Every permission this extension holds is listed on this page with the specific reason it exists.
Maintenance is the unglamorous half. Chrome ships changes on a six-week cadence, target sites change their markup without notice, and Web Store policy is updated periodically with limited warning. We monitor for breakage, publish fixes promptly, respond to reviews, and keep the listing compliant. An extension that is abandoned becomes uninstallable within about two years as platform requirements move — so we treat publishing as a commitment rather than a launch.
